Second attempt at this exercise, this time using the railings in front of the Keswick crazy golf course, taken at the following apertures at 55mm focal length; all centre focussed:
DSC2550: f4 - centre in focus, rest of image out of blurred
DSC2551: f13 - as above, but rest of image less blurred
DSC2552: f22 - as above, but rest of image clearer still

So basically, which aperture setting you choose will depend on how blurred you want the background to be. I like the effect of the f4 setting, but appreciate this may not be appropriate for every situation!
